  1. The first poem by Alexie made no sense to me and it didn't really feel like a poem, it was almost like a shot paragraph which is something I'm not used to seeing with poetry. The second poem by Dee Cervantes was very interesting I did enjoy reading that poem. The way the author phrased the words made the poem so powerful. The third poem by Equi was not what I was expecting. It was kind of confusing but the comparisons Equi made were very interesting and it made me picture every "scream" when I read it. The poem by Harjo started off beautiful and calm and later dove into something deep while still keeping the light words. That was cool to read seeing how Harjo is talking about dark stuff but keeps "lilacs" the main words throughout the poem. 'Left Field" by Nurske made me feel sad. It kind of makes no sense to me but from the last two lines I can tell its something dark which is why it made me feel sad, but I still couldn't grasp the big picture.
I did enjoy reading these short poems but Im not really big on poetry which made me not be into the readings as much.

  2. After reading the assigned poems, I felt so closeminded and not as analytical as I usually am when it comes to finding deeper meanings. I couldn’t really understand what most the poems were truly talking about or where the poets where coming from. The only one I truly understood was “Poem for the Young White Man…” by Lorna Dee Cervantes but only because it was so obvious it was about racism. Another poem I liked was “Left Field” by D. Nurske. In complete honesty, I didn’t truly get that one either BUT I really liked the last stanza, “Secretly I was proudest of my skill at standing alone in the darkness”. It is a really deep, impactful and emotional line that hit me a little harder than the other poems did.
I look forward to reading everyone else’s responses and discussing the poems further in class so I can get a better insight and perspective on what the poets REALLY meant.

  3. I really enjoyed “Left Field.” We’re out in the baseball field with him. The few words he uses really does paint a picture of our surroundings. “I pounded my glove, spat, dug my cleats savagely in the sod and growled swing.” Telling this in first person helped me a lot to see the poem in a clear way. He event tells us why we’re out in the left field position in the first line. “Told I threw like a girl.” Our author is not the best at this sport and his coach has assigned him a position that isn’t as “rewarding” as being an infielder. Sure, he’s still part of a team, but probably will end up moving or doing less than other positions. We get to know at the end that the author is quite frankly okay with that. “Secretly, I was proudest of my skill at standing alone in darkness.” He doesn’t have to be in the position where he might get recognized with glory, he just needs to be in the team where he will get recognized with teamwork. This poem puts into perspective that there will always be others who “throw like older girls” but that it’s ok because we still gain skills alone in darkness.

  4. All of these poems were super cool and unique and in ways that made them very personal. My favorite was “House Party Sonnet: ‘66”. As a college student one can relate to having a little too much to drink at a gathering the night before. So that feeling of waking up and seeing the stale chips was very comical to read. The second one that struck a chord with me was the poem by Lorna Dee Cervantes, in it she talks about how this one privileged person wasn’t able to see the struggle that POC go through. It struck a chord because I wrote a poem similar to that my freshman year of college. It was a poem called “You Will Never Understand” and it’s a poem that had that exact phrase permeated throughout the whole poem. I wrote it after remembering how I felt while I was living in México, I remembered one night I was caught in the crossfire of a shooting involving cartel members and the Mexican military. I wrote it because no matter how hard I try to describe it, I will never do it any justice. The fear that someone could burst through that door at any second still bothers me, I never finished it but this poem made me want to finish it. - Jesús Iván González

  5. By this unit, we are analyzing poetry and now we had to read five poems. Two poems were written in the same format, as in a long paragraph. These poems were “Basketball” by Sherman Alexie (which I did not really enjoy at all reading it), and the other one was “Santa Fe” written by Joy Harjo. The first poem was not f my interest, but Santa Fe was really interesting and made me wonder what the meaning truly is, so I really enjoyed reading it. Another poem that I enjoyed reading was written by Lorna Dee Cervantes, it has a really long name that literally tells us what it is about. I actually think this is a very powerful poem because of the topic and how it addresses it. I did not like the title to Cervantes’ poem, but I liked what the theme is and what message is giving the readers. “A Quiet Poem” by Elaine Equi was very different because of its topic and how it talks about different screams. I actually related to this poem with the line “Many people find it relaxing to scream” because I do find it relaxing and when people really get to know me they know I almost scream when I am talking. The other poem was “Left Field” by D. Nurke, which I think was easier to understand, but I did not really like it. From reading these poems, I found out that they were so different and so unique. As I keep reading poems, I notice how free it is to write them, it is a great form of expression.

  6. I enjoyed Alexis basketball poem the allusion he makes of an unbreakable horse to his undefeated wins as a basketball player. I also enjoyed how he makes a reference to the Indians losing theirs shirts to the bets he makes. The poem gives a vibe if pride and nostalgia remembering perhaps his golden days. My favorite poem was Cervantes the way she writes what her land pretends to be and what it really is. The race war is still going in she reminds us by describing how her children are targets. I really understood how in an education way the minorities still have to catch up to white privilege and many educations in the education system is still going on.I loved how she mentions that the color of her skin makes her a target and how she wishes she was free but she can't. I really related to everything on her poem and thought it so beautiful the reference of the song this land is my land but it really isn't because therr are still divisions going on. I enjoyed the satire of the titke in the poem a quiet poe. I liked or understoid of him drowning out love by the commotion of screams or how one becomes so hard over time -Maria Ramirez Montoya,

  7. These poems that we read this week were enjoyable for me, mainly due in part by the fact that poems can vary so greatly between different styles, forms, and poems. Such as "Basketball" by Alexie being so free of form and really making one reevaluate the contents, structure, and requirements for something to be a poem. As a result, my "poem" this week definitely varies a great deal for the poetry with rhyme schemes. The other poems were also unique, main because I feel like the most enjoyment can be attained from them upon reading them multiple times and thinking about them. It was always a good idea to pause and question, "Does this have double meaning? Why did the author write this?" I did this in particular with "A Quiet Poem," mostly because of my desire to question the irony and the double meanings of silence and screaming. -Hannah Daniel

  8. When I first read "Basketball" I could not really understand how this could be considered a poem. Even though it pushed the envelope in that respect it was so content rich that I had to re-read it over and over again to get the full meaning. The meaning being, in my opinion, the identity of the Indian people after the colonization of the West. Alexie describes the ordeal by comparing it to the game of basketball. Equi's "A Quiet Poem" the author seems to be suffering from some type of verbal or emotional abuse where every event in her life is described as screaming. I do not believe this poem is sarcastic. I sense a person trying to explain to the audience what is occurring. I enjoyed the rhythm and tone of this poem. I enjoyed D. Nurske's "Left Field" due to the theme. When I used to play baseball we would make jokes about players who were not good enough to start. they were riding the pine or playing (left out). I felt badly for the character. He must've been situated outside the fencing of the third base foul line observing the game pretending to be playing in the game yelling "swing" each time a pitch approached the plate.
